‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s path from injury table to scoring with the Basque club
Thehe debut appearance Gorka Guruzeta played in England, an teenage playing for the reserve team against Bundesliga youth at the English ground in fall 2015, he hit the target. During his subsequent match he took the field in British turf, against the Black Cats weeks after, he converted. The third time, against Manchester City not long later, sure enough, he did it once more. As he revisited to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in that year, he found the back of the net. An excellent finish, as well. “Actually,” he remarks, “it ranks among my finest I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did their duty: they substituted him.
“I became very upset,” the attacker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We went to play United and I was pretty good. I wasn’t allowed to feature the latter period: I hadn’t yet signed my contract, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, it’s typical. No confirmation on Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. I’m not certain if it was accurate, but had they contacted me, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. I’m fortunate to be here.”
Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash
At the training ground, Bilbao, the day’s first practice is set to begin; following that, the short journey to Loiu airport and another trip to England, now to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on midweek. Just saying those two words makes Guruzeta smile. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the team, partially owing to the requirements of their participation. Losing in stoppage time in the weekend clash, they have managed just one win of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and Dortmund in Europe. However, take in the big picture, the major occasions he’s experienced and future challenges, and a sense of thankful reflection within him.
In the three years since he had returned to the club, the striker has been a semi-final participant, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by the English giants, and has boarded a decades-old barge up the Nervión estuary surrounded by countless supporters after lifting the trophy, the first title in 40 years. He’s now Athletic’s top scorer in the UCL, where they are countercultural and making their first appearance in a long period. “I couldn’t have pictured this,” he states.
The player believed it challenging enough just to earn a spot and he was right. Born to the one-time rival player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the opposition side, Gorka is from the Antiguoko academy, the Donostiarra team that produced the coach, the legendary midfielder and the tactician. His move to Athletic came at his teens but after his first-team bow in the 2018 season, he experienced a torn cruciate, the cut, a drop in category and a return before he could earn his place, returning at 26 to enjoy the highlights of their lives.
“Joining the setup not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you go through you’re persisting and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in half a dozen appearances between his first game and that period. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. Five, six games there and I suffered the ACL injury.
“A massive setback but In retrospect as a turning point because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. Recovering from a long-term injury is hard, but it’s beneficial. You adopt practices new to you. Previously I was casual, but I attended practice and then return home, like when you’re a kid. At the complex, facilities are comprehensive, so take full advantage. Training, prehab. Hit the weights. With hip imbalance, address that. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. Every small aspect: do them.
“In the first team you’re going to collide with opponents who have experienced contact 200,000 times. Highly robust. Seeing previous pictures: I had slender legs. So what happens, happens. Present-day images and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Practice concludes, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; you have to be too.”
Minutes are crucial. Guruzeta departed emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, moving to a lower level. During his Sabadell spell in the 20-21 campaign, he scored three times in numerous matches. With Amorebieta in the latter part of the season, the he found his form. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. With a turnaround, dedication, confidence, and should the time come a vacancy arises for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. When they decided to call again, an aspiration fulfilled. The trophy success, European football, and make the UCL … pfff.”
Little surprise he states savor the moment. All the more so after the prior campaign which, sometimes, was about endurance. Previously the main threat with sixteen goals, his output dropped to seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
