RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of access tunnels down to the site... initial indications are that the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of numerous British troops on duty over the festive period. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
