The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and delight the passions of enthusiasts with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
