The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed the Toffees their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed their historic home behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien believed he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's opener, directing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising Craig Pawson to check the goal on the pitchside monitor and the official decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves the manager's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and leaders the Gunners.

Everton remain 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven excels in duties at each end of pitch

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a only two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defence, partnering well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off slightly and fans flocked to the gates after Sarr's final goal for Spurs.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Toffees' two established centre-forwards - had scored just one league goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary night on Merseyside.

Beto's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
